Weekly Rants: November 11 2012

In Weekly Rants I will try to update you on the things that have happened during the past week. The main point is that so you guys who, like me, are too lazy to read some news concerning the film industry will still be able to know some stuff that’s up in the industry without having to, unlike me, browse through the clutter of headlines on IMDB. I will do that for you. Or I will try. But of course, keep in mind that most of the stuff I pick to feature here are stuff that interest me. Obviously.

First off, trailer updates. On Thursday, the trailer for Marc Forster’s World War Z came out. It’s actually interesting to see Pitt in this movie, something very different from what he’s been doing for the last few years. Instead of playing a man who keeps getting younger or portraying some real-life characters, this time Pitt battles with zombies. See it here.

Still zombie-related, the trailer for Warm Bodies is also out. It stars Nicholas Hoult and is directed by 50/50’s Jonathan Levine. It’s about the romance of a zombie and a living girl, and how it could change the whole lifeless world. Trust me, it looks a lot better than it sounds.

Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins stars in Feng Xiaogang’s latest, Back to 1942. The film premiered at Shanghai Film Festival back in June but the international trailer came out a while ago. It also stars Feng’s wife and frequent collaborator, Xu Fan, and Zhang Hanyu, who has worked with Feng before as well, notably in 2007’s Assembly.

Let’s go back to Pitt again for a second. His interest in architecture is not new, but apparently he has taken it to the next level—furniture designs. Collaborating with US furniture designer Frank Pollaro, Pitt will launch a dozen-piece collection on the 13th. You can check out their website at pitt-polaro.com. [source]

Eight new character posters of Gangster Squad have been released, here’s the Ryan Gosling one. The film will be released on January 11th next year and you can see the other posters featuring people who are less good-looking than Ryan Gosling here.

The (my) most anticipated movie of 2012, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, has some new stills to offer. The movie will open in theatres on December 14th, but advance tickets are already up for sale since Wednesday and they’re slaying Skyfall’s and Breaking Dawn Part 2’s. However, the perfect Skyfall is enjoying a pretty sweet ride at the box-office and is already the biggest film of the year in the UK. [source, source]

There are four new TV spots for The Hobbit as well. I personally refuse to see them because I want to know as little as possible about the movie and let myself be blown away when I see it on the big screen next month. But you can watch them here. It’s your call.

James McAvoy is likely to star in Bill Condon’s biopic about the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, as his right-hand man Daniel Domscheit-Berg. Before, it was rumored that Joel Kinnaman would have that role. If McAvoy says yes, then he’ll join Benedict Cumberbatch who is already cast as Assange. Let the bromance between the Brit and the Scot commence. [source]

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln has had a limited release but the buzz it’s been getting is undeniable. With insanely positive reviews from critics, it’s looking like a legit front runner for next year’s Oscars. [source]

Star Wars VII is happening, y’all. Seven years after Episode III and 29 years after Episode VI, the talks of Episode VII are sizzling. A writer has been announced by Disney and Lucasfilm, and it’s the Oscar-winning writer of Little Miss Sunshine, Michael Arndt. However, who is going to direct it? Several rumors are around but apparently there are some who are confirmed not going to take the big project and they are Lucas’ best bud Steven Spielberg, Man of Steel’s Zack Snyder, Star Trek’s JJ Abrams, and national douchebag Quentin Tarantino, who said “No sorry. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2) version of Star Wars.” So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. [source]

Todd Phillips posted two new pictures of Bradley Cooper and the rest of the wolf pack on the set of The Hangover 3, see them here.

Well then, until next Sunday!
